A San Diego police officer was killed and another seriously wounded in a shootout Thursday evening.

The incident occurred after the officers, who were working a gang suppression detail, stopped the suspect in the Southcrest neighborhood at approximately 11 p.m.

A shootout ensued, leaving Officer Jonathan DeGuzman dead and Officer Wade Irwin seriously injured.

A wounded suspect was located and taken into custody shortly thereafter. Officers are searching the area for additional suspects.

San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman stated that it was not yet clear if the officers had made a pedestrian or traffic stop on the suspects prior to the shooting.

Officer DeGuzman leaves behind a wife and two children.

More details to come.
