An Oklahoma police officer seriously wounded in a New Year's Day shooting was spared an even more grave outcome thanks to the help of a Good Samaritan.

Valley Brook Officer Brian Southerland pulled over a pickup truck for erratic driving this past Sunday. When he approached the vehicle, the driver opened fire.

Southerland sought cover as the driver fired his weapon; however, the officer was struck by a bullet that severed a major artery.

The suspect fled in his pickup truck as Officer Southerland lay wounded.

Three minutes later a Good Samaritan saw the officer and stopped to help. The concerned citizen jumped into action, grabbing a cross bow string and shirt from his vehicle to make a tourniquet.

Another Valley Brook officer soon arrived and also assisted in providing Officer Southerland with medical assistance. Paramedics transported the injured officer to a local hospital where he is expected to recover.

The suspect was later apprehended.

Oklahoma Police Help Autistic Boy Celebrate His Birthday

When an Oklahoma boy's 3rd birthday party appeared to be falling apart, the police officers of the Yukon Police Department came to the rescue.

Although young Brayden Hubbard's mother had invited upwards of 80 people to the party, people started canceling one-by-one the night before.

Fearing the lack of party-goers would end up disappointing Brayden, who is autistic, an anonymous caller phoned the local police department with an unusual request.

The caller asked if any of the on-duty officers would mind coming by the house and visiting with Brayden.

After verifying the call as legitimate, Capt. Matt Hofer and several other officers came to the party and helped Brayden celebrate.

Brayden's mother was moved by the officers' gesture. "They have done something that will be with me for the rest of my life," she said. "Something I can talk to my son about the rest of his life."

Oklahoma Bill Would Make State the Latest to Adopt Blue Alert System

blue-alert.jpg

A bill working it's way through the Oklahoma state legislature would make the Sooner State the 26th to adopt a statewide Blue Alert System.

The Blue Alert System, similar to public notification systems like the Amber or Silver Alert, uses public billboards and electronic signs to warn drivers and passersby of suspect information related to a killed or severely injured police officer.

25 states have already adopted the system with Florida being the first to do so in 2008.

Oklahoma FOP VP Mark Nelson, speaking of the need for a statewide Blue Alert System, said, "Anytime there's a person who's shown to be that violent and have that much disregard for life that they would assault or kill a law enforcement officer, there's really no telling what they'd do to the public."

The Oklahoma House unanimously passed the bill last week.
