A Washington state police officer is in "very critical" condition after being shot Thursday evening.

The 61-year old Mt. Vernon police officer who was critically injured was among multiple officers that had responded to a domestic violence call and call of a man down.

The suspect, who was barricaded inside a house, began shooting at officers shortly after their arrival. It was during this exchange that the officer was shot in the head.

The officer was taken to a local hospital by helicopter and ushered into surgery; however, he was said to be in "very critical" condition as of Friday morning.

The 44-year old suspect was ultimately taken into custody after a 7-hour standoff.
