A Memphis police officer has died after being struck by the vehicle of a shooting suspect who was attempting to flee police.

The incident occurred Saturday night as officers responded to a call of multiple people shot north of downtown.

Officers located two individuals with gunshot wounds inside a local restaurant and subsequently found another person shot across the street.

The suspect in the shootings was located a short time later but fled in a vehicle. Officer Verdell Smith was attempting to clear a nearby intersection when the suspect sped by, striking him.

Officer Smith would be transported to a local hospital for treatment but he would subsequently die from his injuries.

The suspect was ultimately captured a short distance later after bailing from his vehicle and leading officers on a short foot chase.

Two of the shooting victims were listed in critical condition and the third in non-critical condition.

Officer Smith, 46, is survived by his fiancée, son, two daughters, and father. He was an 18-year veteran of the police force.
