A Hillsborough (FL) County Sheriff's deputy was killed in a head-on collision after his patrol vehicle was struck by a wrong-way driver on Saturday morning.

Deputy John Kotfila, 30, had just concluded an accident investigation at Tampa General Hospital when he entered the Selmon Expressway just before 3 a.m.

Shortly thereafter, a 31-year old male struck Deputy Kotfila's patrol car in a head-on crash.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle died on scene. Deputy Kotfila died of his injuries at a local hospital.

Sheriff David Gee said of the tragedy, "The tragic loss of one of my deputies has all of our hearts heavy. But this sadness is tempered with an enduring pride that our deputy fought the good fight."
