A New Mexico police officer was shot and killed on Friday afternoon and the man arrested in the officer's death was also a wanted fugitive out of Ohio.

Hatch, NM Police Officer Jose Chavez, 33, was shot and killed following a vehicle stop on suspect Jesse Hanes of Columbus, Ohio. Hanes fled following the shooting but was later taken into custody.

Immediately after the shooting, Hanes allegedly tried to carjack multiple people at a nearby rest stop. One man turned his keys over to Hanes but after refusing to go with the suspect he was allegedly shot in the torso.

The man was taken to a local hospital for treatment but his condition has not yet been released.

Hanes's vehicle would eventually be incapacitated and, after a brief standoff, the suspect was taken into custody. Hanes was allegedly also wanted for aggravated murder out of Ohio.

Officer Chavez was a 2-year veteran of the Hatch Police Department. He is survived by his wife and two children.
