Authorities have identified the officer shot and wounded early Saturday morning during an altercation with a theft suspect as Appleton, WI police officer Stephanie Wiener.

Officer Wiener had confronted 23-year old suspect Marcus Felton just after midnight on Saturday after she recognized him as a suspect in a string of convenience store thefts. When she contacted Felton, a violent fight ensued.

Good samaritans came to the aid of Officer Wiener as she fought the suspect; however, Felton was able to wrest Officer Wiener's gun away from her.

The suspect opened fire and struck Officer Wiener in the hip. One of the good samaritans was also struck with gunfire in the upper chest.

Felton then turned the gun on himself, shooting himself dead.

Officer Wiener and the injured good samaritan were transported to a local hospital for treatment. They are both expected to survive.
