Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary John Kelly announced on Wednesday that attempted illegal border crossings dropped 40 percent in February compared to numbers from January.

The data represents the number of individuals apprehended or who were stopped from illegally entering the country along the southern border.

Although DHS noted that there is typically a drop in apprehensions in February over January, the drop is normally in the 10-20 percent range, far lower than the 40 percent recorded this year.
