Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe has vetoed a bill that would have required local law enforcement to maintain custody of arrested illegal immigrants if requested to do so by federal immigration authorities.

"Imposing these requirements on local sheriffs and jail administration really could inject a whole sense of confusion into the relationship, and I would say leads to less effective public safety concerns," McAuliffe told local WTOP.

McAuliffe suggested the legislation was anti-immigrant.
