A Whittier, CA police officer was shot and killed earlier today by a suspected gang-member after officers responded to what they thought was a traffic accident.

The incident occurred at approx. 8 a.m. when officers responded to a traffic accident. What they did not know was that one of the vehicles was reported stolen.

When officers attempted to pat down one of the involved parties he allegedly pulled a gun and began shooting at the officers.

Two officers were struck in the torso by gunfire. They were both wearing body armor; however, one of the officers, identified as Keith Boyer, was mortally wounded.

The other injured officer was taken to a local hospital and is in stable condition.

Officers returned fire and wounded the suspect. He was also taken to a local hospital and is expected to survive.

The suspect, who has not yet been identified, was said to be a gang-member and had only recently been paroled within the past two weeks. He is also suspected in a separate homicide earlier in the day.

Officer Boyer had been with the force for 27 years.
