A Metro Nashville police officer died early Thursday morning after drowning while trying to save a suicidal woman.
Officer Eric Mumaw, an 18-year veteran of the force, responded to a call of a suicidal woman inside her car along the banks of the Cumberland River.
Officer Mumaw and others tried convincing the woman to get out of her car; however, at some point she put the car in gear and drove into the water.
Officer Mumaw, in his attempt to save the woman, was pulled into the river. Although other officers on scene attempted to save him, Officer Mumaw could not be located.
He was ultimately found in the river later in the morning, deceased.
The woman was able to make it out of the water and authorities stated that she appeared to be intoxicated.
