Representative Ken Calvert (R-CA) submitted a bill in the House of Representatives last month that would strip cities and counties of federal funding if those counties or cities had policies in place that prohibited their respective law enforcement agencies form cooperating with detainer requests by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

The "Help Ensure Legal Detainers Act (HELD)," also known as H.R. 514, is ostensibly meant to enhance cooperation between local law enforcement agencies and their federal immigration counterparts.

Rep. Calvert said of the bill, "There are a lot of complicated issues involved in fixing our broken immigration system, but deporting illegal immigrants who have committed serious crimes should not be controversial."

H.R. 514's official title is as follows:

To deny Federal funding to any State or political subdivision of a State that has in effect any law, policy, or procedure that prevents or impedes a State or local law enforcement official from maintaining custody of an alien pursuant to an immigration detainer issued by the Secretary of Homeland Security, and for other purposes
