Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Wednesday suspended grant payments to the Travis County Sheriff's Office after Sheriff Sally Hernandez refused to abide by federal immigration requests to hold suspected illegal immigrants in the county jail.

Sheriff Hernandez has said she will not honor warrantless federal immigration detainer requests outside of those for individuals suspected of murder, aggravated sexual battery, and human smuggling.

Governor Abbott in turn vowed to withhold state funding for the department and on Wednesday suspended more than $1.5 million in grant money destined for the Travis County Sheriff's Office.
