An Indiana police K9 is recovering after being shot during a foot pursuit last Wednesday.

A Lake County police officer along with his K9 partner, Blade, were in pursuit of an individual who had run from a vehicle stop in the city of Gary.

At one point during the pursuit the suspect, identified as Marquis Thomas, 18, opened fire on the officer and K9, striking Blade.

The officer returned fire, striking the suspect. The suspect was taken to a local hospital for treatment but died from his injuries.

Blade was taken to a veterinarian with a broken jaw. He underwent surgery to remove bullet fragments from his neck and jaw and is said to be "very stable."
