A South Carolina police officer, seriously wounded in a shooting last year, has returned to full duty.

Berkeley County Sheriff's Corporal Kimber Gist's remarkable return to duty followed many months of recovery and rehabilitation and included five surgeries.

Corporal Gist was involved in a February 26, 2016 shooting which left her with five gunshot wounds.

The suspect in that incident, Travis Smith, 36, subsequently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
