Milwaukee, WI, the scene of recent protests and riots over a police-involved deadly shooting, has seen it's deadliest month in 25 years, police reported.

24 homicides occurred in Milwaukee in August, the deadliest one-month total since 1991.

The increase in homicides hasn't been relegated to Milwaukee, unfortunately.

Similarly, the city of Chicago in August saw it's highest one-month homicide total in twenty years, with 90 deaths recorded.

The uptick in violence has been attributed to a number of circumstances; notably, a decline in police proactivity and an emboldened criminal element.
