While most of the attention swirling around the NFL these days concerns players taking a stand, or knee, against social injustice in America, at least one player is attempting to demonstrate his pride in the United States.
Avery Williamson, linebacker for the Tennessee Titans, has indicated his desire to wear red, white, and blue cleats on 9/11 to show his patriotic pride.
The NFL's response? They threatened to fine him for breaking the league's uniform code.
In response, the Port Authority Police Benevolent Association indicated that they, along with another union, would pay Williamson's fine for him.
In a statement from the PAPBA, they told the Tennessean, "We read, with understandable interest, your piece on Avery Williamson and the NFL’s stance on Avery honoring the September 11th victims. We, along with the New Jersey State Police Benevolent Association, are offering to pay any reasonable fine levied by the NFL if Avery chooses to wear his 9/11 cleats.”
The Port Authority Police Department is responsible for patrolling the World Trade Center complex.
