A San Diego police officer seriously wounded in a July shootout that left his partner dead has been released from the hospital.

Officer Wade Irwin, 32, was shot in the neck in a July 28 shooting after he and his partner confronted a man acting suspiciously.

The suspect, Jesse Gomez, 52, opened fire, striking Irwin in the neck and fatally shooting Officer Jonathan DeGuzman.

Kevin McQuillen, president of Fraternal Order of Police San Diego Lodge #10, said of Irwin's release from the hospital, "I can’t tell you how happy I am to be able to share this news."

He added, “I understand that his daughter ran up to him, and he was able to pick her up in his arms."
