A North Charleston, SC police officer is recuperating today after being shot on Monday during a standoff with an armed suspect.
Officer Wayne Pavlischek was struck in the side of his torso by gunfire after officers had been called to the scene to investigate allegations of a man driving erratically. His bulletproof vest is credited with sparing him more serious injury.
When officers arrived on scene, the suspect allegedly ran into a house, prompting police to establish a perimeter. At some point, the suspect emerged from a window and opened fire with a rifle, striking Officer Pavlischek.
The suspect, identified as 34-year old William Tracy Patterson, would eventually exit the house and continue firing at officers, prompting a return of fire by police. Patterson was struck by gunfire and taken to a local hospital for treatment where he died of his injuries.
Officer Pavlischek was treated at a local hospital and is said to be in good condition. He is a three-year veteran of the force.
