Louisiana Police Officer Killed by Suspected Drunk Driver

A Louisiana police officer died on Sunday after being struck by a suspected drunk driver.  

Officer David Elahi of the Sterlington, LA police department was out of his patrol car and speaking with a woman who had been pulled over on Highway 165 at just before 5:00 a.m. when a truck driven by Tracy Govan, 44, sideswiped his police vehicle and struck Officer Elahi. 

Officer Elahi was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other police officers were also injured in the accident.  

Govan was taken into custody on charges of vehicular homicide; however, he is now out of jail on bail. 

According to an affidavit, Govan admitted to having fallen asleep at the wheel.
