An Atlanta police officer is recovering today after being shot by a home invasion suspect over the weekend. The officer was spared more serious injury because of his bulletproof vest.

The incident occurred as officers responded to a call of a man who had kicked in the door of an apartment.

As the suspects, identified as Antonio Bell and Michael Thomas, were making their escape through the front door they encountered a responding officer.

Upon seeing the officer, Thomas allegedly opened fire, striking the officer in the torso. The officer returned fire, striking Thomas.

The suspects fled on foot but were apprehended a short time later, along with the gun.

The officer is expected to survive his injuries.
