More than 20 Chicago police officers attended the kindergarten graduation of a slain colleague's son on Friday, stepping in to help fill a void left by the officer's death.
Alejandro "Alex" Valadez Jr.'s father, Officer Alejandro "Alex" Valadez Sr., was shot and killed in 2009 while responding to a call of shots fired.
His death came three months before Alex Jr. was born.
The officers who attended Alex Jr.'s graduation showered him with attention and praise, shaking his hand and handing him his diploma.
Eddie Johnson, the police superintendent, said of their fallen colleague, "He was part of the CPD family then, he's a part of the CPD family now, you're a part of the CPD family forever."
