A Springfield Township police K9 is recovering today after being shot during a pursuit early Friday morning.

Police had initially tried to pull the suspect vehicle over but the driver failed to comply. A vehicle pursuit ensued and stop-sticks were used to incapacitate the vehicle. After stopping, one of the occupants of the car fled on foot with a gun.

Police then released K9 Pako, who chased down the suspect and bit him in the arm. The suspect fired his gun, striking Pako in the shoulder.

That prompted officers to open fire on the suspect, striking him in the lower back.

Both the suspect and Pako are expected to survive their injuries.
