Milwaukee Police Officer Shot, Injured, by Robbery Suspect

A Milwaukee police officer is recovering today after being shot in the chest while pursuing a masked robbery suspect on Thursday evening. Other officers on scene also gave chase of the suspect, who was subsequently shot and killed.

The incident began after three officers witnessed a masked man running from an auto parts store where a robbery had just been reported. A foot chase ensued during which the shooting occurred.

Police say the officer, struck in the chest by gunfire, was saved by his bullet-proof vest. He was treated for contusions and released from the hospital.

The suspect, who died on scene, was identified as Burt Johnson, 38.
