A suspect is in custody following the Saturday shooting of a Georgia police officer.

The incident unfolded early Saturday evening after Harris County Deputy Jamie White pulled over a vehicle about 80 miles south of Atlanta.

When he approached the car, suspect Joe Lee Garrett, 24, allegedly opened fire, striking Deputy White in the face.

The suspect vehicle fled the scene; however, Garrett turned himself into police in Alabama the following day.

Deputy Garrett is expected to survive but may lose his eye as a result of the injury.
