Illinois Officer Wounded in Shootout With Suspected Shoplifter

An Illinois police officer attempting to take a suspected shoplifter into custody was shot and wounded during a struggle over the officer's gun on Thursday.

Officers were called to a Lansing strip mall over a man reportedly shoplifting from an Ultra grocery store. When they confronted the man, identified as 43-year old Warren Christian, he allegedly tried to grab an officer's gun.

During the struggle the officer was shot in the lower leg. The suspect was also shot and died as a result of his injuries.

The officer was treated for non-life threatening injuries.
