Almost 44 years after Michigan State Trooper Steven DeVries was gunned down after pulling over a suspected bank robber, a portion of U.S. 12 in Michigan will be renamed in his honor.

Trooper DeVries, 32 at the time of his death, left behind a wife and two young children, a loss that has impacted those he left behind for over four decades.

"You don’t ever really get over it," said his widow Dena Enders.

The renaming of a portion of U.S. 12, though 44 years after Trooper DeVries death, is a reminder that although his sacrifice came many years before, his memory has not been forgotten among a community and those whose lives he impacted.
