A retired New Jersey police lieutenant has died following injuries sustained while riding in the Police Unity Tour, a bicycle ride from Florham Park, NJ to the National Law Enforcement Officer's Memorial in Washington, D.C.

Retired Roxbury Police Lt. Joe Franklin was critically injured in the first day of the ride.

The Police Unity Tour is in it's 20th year, having begun in 1997 with only 18 riders. Today, over 1,700 riders participate in the 320-mile ride.
