A Connecticut man is under arrest after he allegedly fought with officers and choked a police dog following a domestic violence investigation this past Saturday.
Officers Jay Kaufman, Matthew Clerkin, and Luigi Amasino, along with K9 Joker were called to the scene of an alleged domestic dispute at the Branford Motel on Saturday night.
When they arrived on scene they located suspect Louis Ortiz, 38, on a second floor balcony and as they approached him he became combative and lunged toward officers and their K9.
Branford police Captain Geoffrey Morgan stated, "As Officer Kaufman tried to take Ortiz into custody, he became combative and non-compliant with officers commands. Ortiz lunged at K9 Joker and was eventually subdued by Joker and the officers; however Ortiz tried to choke the K9 and continually fought with the officers."
Two officers were injured in the incident and received treatment. Joker reportedly did not require medical attention.
Ortiz was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. He has been charged with third-degree assault, cruelty to animals, and assault on an officer, among other charges.
