A man found guilty of murdering a Florida deputy in 2013 has been sentenced to death.
Eriese Tisdale was convicted of shooting and killing Sgt. Gary Morales of the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Office during a traffic stop on February 28, 2013.
The sentence brings a sense of closure for the family and friends of Sgt. Morales as dozens of deputies stood in line at the courthouse, awaiting the sentencing verdict.
Although Tisdale apologized for causing the pain felt by the Morales family, he also commented on a need for new laws to provide stricter punishment for police officers who shoot citizens.
Tisdale's mother also expressed skepticism at the fairness of the judicial process governing interactions between police officers and members of the public.
"We are here because of fear. Because of no dash cams, body cameras. If my son had been killed, Gary Morales would have been put on paid administrative leave, the outcome justified," Charmaine Tisdale said.
