NYPD Officers Rescue Autistic Boy in the Breakers Off Coney Island

NYPD officers are being heralded for saving an autistic teenager who ran away from a school program over the weekend and ended up in the breakers off Coney Island.

The boy, 14, who is non-verbal, took off from a special school program at PS 721 and proceeded to run two and a half miles to the beach at Coney Island.

As a search for the boy was underway, a bystander called police to report a naked teen running in and out of the water.

Officers arrived and spent considerable time working on convincing the boy to come out of the water on his own. Officers eventually had to remove their equipment and wade into the waters themselves, pulling the boy out to safety.

The incident highlights the variety of challenges that a police officer may face during their shift.
