An Omaha police officer shot and killed in the line of duty last year was awarded the Omaha Police Foundation's highest honor: Officer of the Year.

Officer Kerrie Orozco was killed on May 20, 2015, after she was shot while trying to arrest suspect Marcus Wheeler. Officers returned fire, killing Wheeler.

Officer Orozco was one day away from going on maternity leave to care for her child born premature three months earlier.
