A Nashville police officer was brutally attacked by a group of people while attempting to take an assault suspect into custody on Tuesday. The incident was caught on tape and has since gone viral on social media.

Officer Matthew Cammarn, who last year was named the Nashville Police Department Officer of the Year for his role in saving the life of a young gunshot victim, was patrolling the James Cayce housing complex when he witnessed suspect Brian Shannon strike a woman.

When Officer Cammarn confronted Shannon, the suspect began to fight with the officer. As the two struggled on the ground, onlookers began to grab and pull at Officer Cammarn, as well as strike him in the head, in an apparent attempt to help Shannon escape.

Shannon and an unidentified 17-year old would eventually be arrested on scene. Officer Cammarn was rushed to Vanderbilt University Medical Center with a head injury and released the following morning.

The James Cayce housing complex is the same location where an officer was stabbed the night before while intervening in a fight.
