An NYPD officer was hospitalized and treated for smoke inhalation after rushing into a burning home to save a family's dogs early Wednesday morning.
The officer was returning back to the city after having dropped off a police surgeon who had just assisted in treating another officer shot and wounded earlier in the day. When the officer noticed the Long Island home engulfed in flames he stopped to help.
The family had already safely exited the home but their dogs remained inside. The officer went in to the burning home and was able to rescue several dogs, although one died in the fire.
