Two Des Moines Police Officers Killed in Head-On Collision

Two Des Moines, IA police officers were among four people killed in a head-on vehicle collision early this morning, police have confirmed.

The incident began just after midnight as Officers Susan Farrell, 30, and Carlos Puente-Morales, 34, were transporting a prisoner on eastbound I-80. A wrong-way driver entered the roadway and crashed into the patrol car head-on.

All four people involved, the two officers along with the prisoner and driver of the wrong-way vehicle, were killed in the accident.

Des Moines City Councilman Chris Coleman said of the incident, "This is really a horrific day in the history of Des Moines. It’s just something that you pray you never go through.”

Officers Farrell and Puente-Morales both recently graduated from the police academy in October, 2015. They are the 21st and 22nd Des Moines officers to die in the line of duty, respectively.
