A Tampa, FL police officer responding to a call of two men fighting on Saturday afternoon was shot in the upper chest and seriously injured. Both of the other men involved in the altercation were shot and died at the scene.

Police are crediting Officer Jose Rodriguez's bulletproof vest with likely saving his life.

When Officer Rodriguez arrived on scene and confronted the men, one of them opened fire, striking the officer in his upper chest.

Officer Rodriguez returned fire; however, it is unclear at this time who fired the shots that killed the two suspects.

"Detectives are working to determine the details of the gunfire exchange and the timeline of events,” said Tampa police.

Officer Rodriguez, 53, is a 13 year veteran of the force. He is expected to survive his injuries.
