Aide to Mayor de Blasio Arrested for Obstructing NYPD Officers

An aide to New York Mayor Bill de Blasio's office has been arrested for obstructing police officers who were attempting to place handcuffs on an emotionally disturbed individual.

Five Omar Mualimm-ak, 40, was arrested on Tuesday after interfering with NYPD officers who were dealing with an emotionally disturbed 42-year old man.

Mualimm-ak, along with fellow activist Joseph “Jazz” Hayden, 74, saw the interaction between the man and NYPD officers and decided to begin filming. 

The interaction quickly became tense and both Mualimm-ak and Hayden were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and interfering with a government official, among other charges. Hayden was also charged with resisting arrest.

Mualimm-ak has been an advisor to Mayor de Blasio's office on police and corrections issues.
