A Mesa County (CO) Sheriff’s Deputy is in critical condition and near death after being shot by a 17-year old suspect on Monday morning.

Deputy Derek Geer had responded to a call of a person with a gun when he located an individual who matched the description of the suspect. The individual fled on foot but Deputy Geer gave chase, deploying his taser.

The suspect then fired multiple rounds at Deputy Geer, inflicting grievous injury. The suspect was ultimately taken into custody.

Mesa County Sheriff Matt Lewis stated, “I am heartbroken to update all staff that Deputy Derek Geer is in the final hours of his life. He is currently on life support at St. Mary's Hospital while final arrangements are made for him to provide one last measure of service in the form of organ donation. I am told this could take up to 48 hours.”

Deputy Geer, 40, is a U.S. Navy veteran and the father of two children, aged 11 and 13.
