A Seaside, OR police officer has died after being shot while trying to arrest a suspect with a warrant on Friday night.

Sgt. Jason Goodding, a 13-year veteran officer, was shot while approaching suspect Phillip Ferry, 55, in an attempt to take him into custody on an outstanding felony assault warrant.

Sgt. Goodding and another officer had used a taser on Ferry while trying to gain his compliance;  however, when Sgt. Goodding attempted to place him into custody Ferry shot him.

The other officer on scene returned fire. Ferry was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital where he later died of his wounds.

Sgt. Goodding is the fourth officer to be killed in the line of duty this year.
