A Good Samaritan teamed with a Suffolk County police officer to save an elderly woman from her burning home on Wednesday afternoon.
Officer Matthew Funaro arrived at the home to find smoke and flames billowing out of the two story residence.
When Funaro got into the home he found Helen Morris, 88, sitting in her wheelchair on the first floor.
Although he tried to extinguish the flames he couldn’t overcome their intensity.
That’s when Funaro and another man, 55-year old Joseph Cartelli, carried Morris out of the home.
Suffolk County Police Commissioner Timothy Sini said, “We were able to save a life. This was a serious fire and because of Officer Funaro and Mr. Cartelli a woman is alive today,”
