President-elect Donald Trump called the widow of fallen NYPD Officer Paul Tuozzolo to offer his condolences on Thursday, the day Officer Tuozzolo was laid to rest.

Officer Tuozzolo was shot and killed as he responded to a burglary call last week. On Thursday, thousands of mourners attended his funeral.

The New York Post reported that Trump allegedly told Officer Tuozzolo's widow, "I’m very sorry I cannot be there with you today. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family during this difficult time. I want to express my condolences from me and my family.”

2016 has been a particularly dangerous year for police officers throughout the nation. Thus far, officers shot and killed in the line of duty has spiked nearly 70% from 2015.
