A veteran sergeant with the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department was shot and killed yesterday after he responded to a call of a burglary. The suspect, who was shot by responding deputies, was taken into custody.

Sergeant Steve Owen, 53, was mortally wounded by gunfire in the incident. A second deputy on scene gave chase to the suspect, who attempted to steal Sergeant Owens' patrol car.

After the suspect attempted to ram another deputy with the patrol car, the deputy fired upon the suspect.

The suspect again fled on foot, this time into a home with two teenagers inside. The teens were unharmed in the incident.

The suspect was eventually taken into custody and transported to a local hospital for treatment of his gunshot wound.
