A Fairbanks police officer shot and seriously wounded nearly two weeks ago has died from complications related to surgery.

Fairbanks Sergeant Allen Brandt was ambushed and shot multiple times after responding to a call of shots fired. The incident was partially captured on dash-cam video.

Sergeant Brandt had been recovering - well enough to address a city council meeting just last week - but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries following surgery on Thursday.

He deteriorated after surgery and passed away on Friday.

Police Chief Brad Johnson said, "I'm sorry to have to let you know that earlier this afternoon, Sgt. Allen Brandt lost the fight. He had surgery yesterday and suffered complications afterward, which continued to deteriorate through the day and from which he was unable to recover."

The suspected shooter, Anthony George Jenkins-Alexie, 29, is in custody.
