A police K9 was injured in Southern California after being stabbed by a knife-wielding suspect early Wednesday morning.
Officers in Fullerton, CA. responded to a call of a man wielding a knife in the early morning hours. When they instructed the man, identified as 42-year old Jimmy Lastra, to drop his weapon he refused.
Officers attempted to use less-lethal weaponry in order to gain compliance; however, it was unsuccessful.
When Lastra still refused to comply, officers released K9 Rotar in an attempt to subdue the suspect. Lastra instead stabbed the 3.5 year old K9, prompting officers to open fire.
Lastra was taken into custody and transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Rotar was treated at a local veterinarian for minor injuries. He is expected to be back at work in about a week.
