A Utah police officer made a slight detour on his way to the funeral of fallen Unified Police Officer Douglas Barney earlier this week. The reason: to help rescue an elderly couple from their burning home.

Unified Police Officer Brandon Sulich could see flames coming out of the roof of the home when he arrived on scene. He immediately ran into the house and found an elderly couple unable to escape.

Sulich began helping the couple out of the residence, placing one individual in a wheelchair and carrying them out to safety before Sergeant Trudy Cropper and Officer Scott Folkers arrived on scene to assist.

“I feel like Doug Barney wouldn't have wanted us to stop any type of police response because of him,” Officer Sulich said.

The dramatic rescue was caught on police body cameras (see below).
