A Miami Gardens (FL) police officer is recovering after being ambushed and shot early Friday morning.
Officer David Starling, an 8-year veteran, was writing a police report inside of his patrol car when a man drove by and shot at the officer.
The suspect, identified as 24-year old David Mejia, allegedly made eye contact with Officer Starling then backed up his vehicle and began shooting.
Mejia fled but was subsequently apprehended by officers after he crashed his vehicle.
Chief Antonio Brooklen said of the incident, “If you have that much hate and aggression to attempt to assassinate a police officer who is paid to protect and serve, there is no justification for it. None whatsoever.”
Officer Starling suffered wounds to his lower torso and was transported to a local hospital where he is listed in fair condition.
