A Kentucky state trooper, on the job for only a few months, was shot and killed late Sunday night following a vehicle stop in the western part of Kentucky. The shooting took place off of I-24.
Trooper Joseph Ponder, with the Kentucky State Police since January, was pronounced dead at a Princeton, KY hospital shortly after being shot.
Police engaged in a massive manhunt for alleged gunman Thomas Johnson-Shanks, 25, and located him in a rural area off of I-24. Armed with a handgun and refusing to comply with police orders, Johnson-Shanks was shot and ultimately died of his injuries.
Trooper Ponder was a U.S. Navy veteran and had been working at the Mayfield, KY station following graduation from the police academy.
