A man suspected of being involved in a string of home burglaries in Florida was apparently killed and eaten by an alligator while on the run from cops, police said.

Matthew Riggins, 22, had told his girlfriend that he and another man were headed out to burglarize homes on November 13 in Barefoot Bay.

When police received a call of suspicious people lurking behind homes in the area they sent officers out to investigate. Responding officers arrived on scene and pursued the suspects, who fled on foot.

Riggins was reported missing the next day. His remains were found 10 days later and a combative alligator was located nearby. The alligator was caught and euthanized and human remains consistent with physical injuries to Riggins’ were located inside the animal.

Police believe that the alligator likely killed Riggins while the burglary suspect was hiding from police.
