A Colorado police officer is lucky to be alive after being viciously attacked by an individual the officer was trying to help.

The incident occurred early Monday morning when an Aurora police officer (whose identity has not yet been released) informed dispatch that he was stopping to provide assistance to a stranded motorist.

According to police, as the officer was walking toward his patrol car the suspect tackled him from behind and struck him over the head with an unknown object. The officer suffered a significant head injury and large gash on the top of his head.

The suspect then stole the officer's patrol car and led responding officers on a high speed chase.

The chase ended when an officer made contact with the suspect's vehicle, causing it to spin out. The suspect emerged from the vehicle holding an unknown object in his right hand.

Officers ordered the suspect to drop the item but he refused. Police fired several rounds at the suspect and he was pronounced dead on scene.

Aurora Police Chief Nicholas Metz said of the incident, "When you see what's happening around the country, when you see what happened in Colorado Springs, our officers every single day are responding to very hazardous kinds of situations."
