A Kentucky police officer shot in the head while searching for a robbery suspect on Wednesday has died.
Richmond Police Officer Daniel Ellis, 33, sustained the grievous injuries after being ambushed and shot while searching an apartment for individuals connected to a nearby robbery.
Ellis was a seven year veteran of the Richmond police department.
The suspected shooter, Raleigh Sizemore, 34, allegedly shot Ellis after the officer entered the room where Sizemore was hiding. Another officer on scene shot and wounded Sizemore and he was subsequently taken into custody.
Richmond Mayor Jim Barnes said, "It's just heartbreaking. It's an emotional time for everyone in the community. Those guys work so hard to protect the city."
Officer Ellis left behind a wife and 4 year old son. He is the 107th officer to have died in the line of duty this year.
